History
The City of Delray Beach purchased the land in 1923. A 9-hole course designed by Donald Ross opened January 1, 1926; it closed during WWII and reopened in 1945.
A second nine, designed by Dick Wilson, opened in 1950.
The club hosted the inaugural Louise Suggs Invitational LPGA tournament in March 1966. Gene Sarazen, Tommy Bolt, Tommy Armour (a longtime instructor there), Toney Penna, and Walter Hagen are all associated with the club’s history.
The city repurchased the course in February 1979, built a new clubhouse in 1995, and installed TifEagle greens on all 18 holes in 2003. The USGA cited it around 2000 as one of the finest public courses in the nation, and it is listed on the Florida Historic Golf Trail and the local Register of Historic Places (added June 2023).
Currently closed for a renovation reported at roughly $30 million, which began in November 2025 with a target reopening of November 2026.
